Of mice and men English essay- Explore the ways in which John Steinbeck presents power in the fight scene. The 1930’s was hard time for most people who lost their money in the Wall Street crash. John Steinbeck tries to portray how tough life was back then in his novel mice and men. Mice and men also portray how power was abused and the way that it was used in the 1930’s. In the fight scene power is portrayed in many different ways physical power, financial power, collective power, emotional blackmail, status power and people who are disempowered. John Steinbeck uses alliteration in the description where Lennie lets go of his hold ‘he crouched cowering against the wall. He ‘crouched cowering’ is a brilliant use of alliteration because it adds suspense to the scene they were in and it emphasis the point that he is cowardly and abuses his financial power over the men and tries t o use them but fails. These words makes Curley look like the ‘bad guy’and reminds us of how over confident he was the first time that George and Lennie met him. In conclusion power is portrayed in many different ways in of mice and men but there are many occasions where people abuse their power in the one scene I have been writing about . This is one of the reasons that life was so tuff in the 1930’s a people didn’t have relationships like George and Lennie’s. The abuse of power eventually drove George to killing Lennie because he knew what life would be like if he didn’t kill him. The power and status of people back then meant the difference of being controlled by someone’s abuse of power or controlling someone.
